ABOUT READING AWARENESS SOCIETY FOR DEVELOPMENT IN AFRICA (RASDA)

READING AWARENESS SOCIETY FOR DEVELOPMENT IN AFRICA (RASDA) is a Non- Governmental and a non- profit making organization with an unquantifiable passion for the promotion of reading culture in Africa. Over the years, RASDA has taken great and effective steps to rigorously campaign against the neglect of books especially by children and youths in and out of school in Nigeria and across the continent of Africa. The activities of RASDA have been centered on making all to see the importance of developing the culture of READING hence our slogan is Reading brings out the star in you!

Our Vision
To promote a formidable reading culture among Africans through sustainable awareness campaigns.

Our Mission
To be a dynamic channel of intellectual capacity building of Africa in placing the continent on its path of development in the world.

Objectives
  • To motivate nation-wide and continental reading awareness programmes.
  • To help inculcate reading habits/reading culture as a way of developing an all-round personality of an individual with implications for social and moral empowerment.
  • To initiate and set up fully equipped Reading Resource Centres in major towns and rural areas for comfortable reading atmosphere.
  • To initiate and fund billboards, hand out, posters to encourage and foster reading habits.
  • To give motivational Awards/Prizes to corporate bodies or individuals who share our vision of promoting reading habits.
  • To set up Reading Clinics and Reading Therapy Centre in strategic places, to assist children/adults with reading disabilities.
  • To initiate and encourage student’s Reading Clubs.
  • Organizing of Read To Lead Africa Reality TV Shows
Activities
Our collaborative efforts with government schools, libraries, institutions of higher learning, publishers and individuals has been tremendously successful and encouraging.

Workshop and Seminars
At several times, we organized workshops, seminars and training sessions for students, teachers, parents and other stakeholders in the education sector.

RASDA organized reading awareness campaigns for the students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, University of Ibadan and Obafemi Awolowo University. We also took the campaign to secondary schools in various local government areas in Osun, Oyo and  Rivers State.

Donations of Materials and Books
  1. RASDA donated; 4,000 copies of READING AWARENESS POSTERS to all the government owned secondary schools in Oyo State.
  2. 10,000 copies of READING AWARENESS POSTERS were also to all the government owned primary schools in Oyo State.
  3. Billboards were erected in institutions of higher learning and major cities and towns in Oyo State.
  4. Thousands of READING AWARENESS STICKERS were pasted on public and private vehicles.
  5. 2,500 copies of READING AWARENESS POSTERS were also donated to the office of the Head of Service in Oyo State for all government offices and parastatals.
  6. RASDA donated a 40ft by 20ft billboard to Kwara State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
  7. Donation of READING CLINIC, a library that caters for reading inadequacies was declared opened by Prof Niyi Osundare, a Distinguished Professor of English at the University of New Orleans, USA at Bodija Isopako, Ibadan Oyo State.

Market Campaigns
RASDA introduced other unconventional means of reach-outs. We took campaigns to markets in Ibadan, sensitizing market men and women to join hands in encouraging their children to read always.
We organized effective road shows to create awareness, distribute handbills.

Rural Community Outreaches
We held series of community based meetings with parents, teachers, community leaders, traditional rulers and the generality of the people in towns, villages and hamlets.

ABOUT READ TO LEAD AFRICA!!!... AFRICA'S PREMIER TEENAGE CEREBRAL & ENTERTAINMENT REALITY TV SHOW
Read to Lead Africa is a cerebral teenage reality TV show in which the participant who are senior secondary school students live as housemates for 21 days. The show opens a thrilling window into the lives of the housemates who are expected to live normally and properly in the house while their activities, moods and behaviours are captured continuously on camera, and packaged for television viewers to partake in their feelings and their daily real life dramas.

Housemates are visited and trained by seasoned resource persons in the fields of journalism, literary arts, law, science and technology, sports, leadership, health, entertainment and politics. As the show progresses, housemates drawing from the training, their intelligence and their exposure to books and reading, escape eviction by engaging one another in eviction contest like public speaking, quiz competition, critical thinking contests, debate competitions, impromptu speech contests, masterminds, library research tasks, essay writing contests and many more.

Housemates’ evenings and spare times are spent having fun –excursions to tourist sites, partying, swimming, chatting, sporting, moonlight games, and most especially READING. All these, the viewers enjoy on TV.
Eviction tasks continue till two finalists emerge. They contest in a debate on the grand finale in the presence of parents and dignitaries. The winner goes home with N2,000,000, scholarship star prize, first runner up goes with N500,000 scholarship prize and the second runner up, N250,000 scholarship prize while others are rewarded with fantastic consolation prizes. The wealth of knowledge and exposure gathered also sticks with the participants long after they have left the competition.

The Read to Lead TV Reality Show is the concept of Reading Awareness Society for Development in Africa (RASDA) a Non-Governmental Organization founded in 2007 by Mrs. Bukola Ladoja, a psychologist, Journalist and author. The aim of the NGO is to promote a formidable reading culture in Africa through sustainable awareness campaigns. In its bid to take the reading crusade across Africa and into as many homes as possible, the organization created the Read to Lead Africa TV project. Television is one of the greatest means of entering the homes of people you may never meet.
